WPDer: “Kenny-G” Reflection

“It is essential to see the other side of your friends and teammates…”

Kenny-G” – Beta Group

Thanks to WPD, Tuesday nights became a special time for me each week. I could go without the flatulence that Dr. McNeal would consistently create, but everything else was awesome. One of the best things about WPD is the environment, which allows the whole group to be vulnerable and authentic. It is essential to see the other side of your friends and teammates, and WPD is the vehicle that allows for that. Not every day was a super serious topic. There would be nights that we were all tired from practice and out of energy and would talk about the most random things instead, but even those nights of fellowship were meaningful and special.

As previously mentioned, Doc can be gassy, but don’t let that trick you into thinking that he doesn’t have much wisdom to offer. Dr. McNeal has helped me immensely in my own spiritual walk, as well as athletic, social, and academic life (the other 3 wheels that WPD incorporates). In my time as a student athlete, it was (and still is) very hard to balance all four of those areas, but each Tuesday night it felt like there was always something to take away to become better at that balance. Whether that be from Dr. McNeal, or from the conversations he facilitated.

I will forever be thankful for the time I got to share with the Beta group. The experience is so much better when the group of guys in it are all bought in and willing to be honest with one another, and that’s exactly how it was, so shout out to the Weenies, Buzz, Q, and The Professor, and any other members who made a guest appearance.
