Alone Again. Not Naturally.

“A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecc 4:12

OK. Make it four…five…a dang cable.

The author classically writes about the benefits of not being alone.

Two (or more):

  • are better than one.
  • get more work done.
  • offer companionship.
  • protect our sterns.
  • offer more resources.

The recent loss of a young military family man (former athlete) by suicide tightened otherwise loose strands (other athletes) together…for the moment. That is good.

My “cord” is not thick like a ship’s mooring line but more like a gym climbing rope.

Here’s what I am pondering. Even in the midst of outward facing responsibilities (with the “I’m the Man” game face on) the race can be lonely and isolated.

Part of me says “So, what of it?” Just grind it alone. But in doing that I generally cover my heart –  (thinking, feeling willing) a sacred space that the Spirit shows up – essentially telling the Spirit to take a hike cause I got this. Risky  thinking. If I can do it all on my own, then what substance am I really doing?

So I am thankful for those few who make up my strand of brothers.

May we all have our own cords with trusting strands that tighten when life bears down on us, bending our knees. Brothers, you have lived long enough to see this truth.

Pondering…
