WPDSports community, let me introduce you to Dewayne “Bushman” Miner. He is a father, husband, and K-12 educator. I’ve known Dewayne for 25+ years since he was a dirt-poor, smelly student-athlete. Our time together? Mutual mentoring and running…oh…and eating.
Some “Bushman” Facts:
- “Bushman” transfers from DI powerhouse to a smaller DII school. Why? If you ask him, he says, “God.” Truth be told the pre-“Bushman” runs from God in the early years. On a long run in the Arkansas heat, Dewayne stops and kneels. He meets the Lover of his soul.
- “Bushman” name originates from Dewayne’s propensity to use the “can” on any given run. Where’s Dewayne? He’s in the “bush.” Stop. Drop. Run. Precision.
- “Bushman” loves to eat. So much so that this next story remains legendary. On a run with the “Bushman” I spot him picking up a random potato chip off the road. Never one to pass up eats he stops, picks it up, eats it, and resumes the run.

Quick “Bushman” Stats:
- University of Arkansas DI All-American honors in cross-country and track.
- Transfers to DII SBU 1994-95.
- Two-time All-American at SBU in indoor track
- Two-time MIAA indoor champion
- MIAA conference meet record in indoor mile.
- SBU record in indoor 1500 meter.
- SBU Sports Hall of Fame.
- Powered his high school to 1988 state cross-country title.
- Note: Fall of 2021 the “Bushman” throws down a sub 5:00 mile at the age of 50.
Not surprising that the “Bushman” loves soul, sport, and food. His “Fuel Up” (gifts) fills student-athlete bellies, encourages community, enhances soul work, and lights competitive fires. I am thankful for his care. I am glad he is giving back.
Here’s the “Bushman” Challenge:
Miner Mentor Meals: $50.00/month. Help Sports Mentor spend one-on-one time with ONE student-athlete. You can feed one or more. Good happens with a shared meal.
